Clean Up Crew

A group of Year 6 girls have shown great initiative and leadership. They have been instrumental in encouraging and educating the student population on the importance of recycling. The Clean Up Crew (Sophie Rogers, Charlotte Smith, Georgina Quinlan & Chloe Elbourne) developed a slide show presentation and talked to each of the year groups about keeping our school clean.

Kindergarten and Year 4 Kitchen Garden students were also informed about recycling and what belongs in each household bin through talks from Know Waste. Kindergarten saw where their household rubbish ends up when they visited the Moree Waste facility on their excursion.

The school is now recycling plastic bottles and cans sold at the canteen. To date we have saved 2112 bottles from entering landfill and have raised $211.20 for our school.

We would like to thank Moree Plains Shire Council for organising the Know Waste talks and for donating four large recycling bins to our school to help get us started.

Congratulations to the P&C co-ordinators, Mrs Humphries and Ms Miller and to all who contributed to the event. It was truly a team effort with parents, staff members and students coming together for stalls, games and entertainment. While the fete is one of the major fundraisers each alternate year, I would have to say that it was the friendly family atmosphere set in the beautiful playground that proved to be a winner!

Debating

Debating is an exciting way to have a friendly argument and last Friday our two teams did not disappoint! MPS Gwydir, Sophie Rogers, Harriet Beattie, Phoebe Tydd and Chloe Elbourne debated for the affirmative: That parents should pay their children to do tasks around the house. Moree was awarded this debate with the adjudicator commenting the speakers were confident in their line of argument, presented some strong rebuttals to the oppositions argument that there is more to life than money!

The MPS Mehi team, Camilla Johnston, Lucy Kilner, Emily Kerr and Cheryl Lousick also won the toss to debate the affirmative, That all classrooms should have a dog or a cat as a pet. Despite some excellent ideas about helping to give homeless pets a nice home, Bingara was able to counter this argument with ideas that pets can be rather unpredictable and could pose a real danger to the students! Bingara was awarded this debate.

Year 4 excursion

On Wednesday, 7th of August the Year 4 students travelled to Coffs Harbour for the annual Year 4 Excursion.

The first day involved an educational guided tour through the dense and diverse sub-tropical Dorrigo Rainforest. Students walked amongst dense bushland and local wildlife learning about the history and ecology of this wonderful natural site. Finishing with perfect photo opportunity on the skywalk allowed the students to view the spectacular great escarpment.

The next stop was the Big Banana where students used their skills of stealth and strategy during a heart-pumping game of laser tag. This was followed by 18 challenging holes of minigolf which saw some holes in one and a few balls in the water.

That evening students experienced an informative and hands-on reptile presentation by Steve McEwan. He shared his expertise about a variety of reptiles and provided students with a close-up encounter with many different cold-blooded creatures including a giant python, green tree snake and baby crocodile.

The fun continued on the second day with lessons, tours and shows at Dolphin Marine Magic. The students were amazed by the acrobatic skills displayed by the resident dolphins and sea lions and were lucky enough to give them a pat, receive a special dolphin kiss and a seal hug.

The marine adventures continued at the Solitary Islands aquarium. Students explored the exhibits to investigate and interact with fish and underwater creatures local to the rock pools and reefs or the nearby marine park. Holding a slimy sea cucumber and spikey sea urchin was certainly a highlight for some. The afternoon activities wrapped up at Digger's Beach with a highly contended sandcastle building competition.

After dinner, students went to Club 300 for an exciting game of ten pin bowling. With high scores, wobbling pins and lots of laughter, the students had a blast!

Friday morning started with a visit to the Butterfly Sanctuary where the students took a stroll amongst 500 of live Australian butterflies. They viewed an interesting dinosaur presentation and met a baby velociraptor.

On the trip home, the students were treated with a stopover at Ebor to view the majestic waterfalls.

A big thankyou to Miss Jones, Miss Rigby and Mr Makim for their assistance throughout the excursion. Without their hard work and support the excursion wouldn’t be the success that it was. - Mr Burgess

Congratulations to our infants students: Imogen Brazel, Levi Nolan, Chloe Muggleton, Beau Ross, Jaylan Bryans, Nate Grasnick, Ally Duncan, Nicholas Brown, Pearl Humphries and Grace Atkins for continuing to read, read and READ! AND, a fantastic team effort by class 5/6L-14 is also to be applauded – reaching Level 4 twice! This means many hours of reading each night have been accumulated by the students and a trophy is proudly standing on their bookshelf.

Reverend Brown kindly welcomed our school and as always, our students listened attentively and displayed excellent manners. Student representatives involved in the service are to congratulated as too, the choir under the guidance of Miss March and Mr Roberts. A little later in the morning parents took the opportunity to join the teachers for morning tea followed by our open classrooms session. Teachers and students were delighted to welcome parents and friends visit their classroom. This is always a wonderful opportunity to learn more about what and how your child is being taught and also engage with your child and teacher at school. Thank you to all involved in our Education Week activities.

Long distance running requires some serious determination and our students did not disappoint. They represented our school well as they competed against the best runners from around the region and certainly the before school training runs with Mrs Black, prepared the students well for the hills and cool weather. Special congratulations to Jonah James and Henry Johnston who both arrived home in 7th position and are reserves for the north west team that will compete at Eastern Creek early next term.

As adults, we sometimes feel that public speaking is a daunting activity! I am pleased to say, not so for a group of students who put their hand up to participate in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition last week. The students prepared well for the challenge in what was an extremely close contest. The adjudicators were impressed with the skill shown by students in their research and presentation of a prepared speech on the topic relating to multicultural Australia, followed by an impromptu speech (with only five minutes preparation time). Well done to Chloe Elbourne, Harriet Beattie, Emma Tydd and Edward Beattie who will now represent MPS at the regional finals.

Students of the Moree Public School Cross Country Team enjoyed a warm and sunny day at North Star on the 24th May 2019. The course was difficult in many spots, due to the dry and dusty conditions that has produced a challenging track. Despite fierce competition from other schools, each Moree Public School team member tried their best and encouraged their fellow peers along the way. Thanks go to those parents who offered their assistance with manning check points and cheering throughout the day. Congratulations to all runners and especially the large contingent selected to take part in the regional competition at Mullaley.
Miss Quirk and Miss Everingham accompanied students to Tamworth to play seven mini games of touch football. It was a very early start for the boys and girls but the cold weather did not deter their spirits. Although each member of the teams played hard and fairly, showing true Moree Public School pride, they were not successful to continue to the next round. However, the students should be very proud of their efforts from the day.

Reconciliation week

Reconciliation week was an opportunity for MPS staff to join with parents and community members at the morning tea held last Tuesday. We welcomed many of our Aboriginal Elders, parents and friends, enjoying a chat over morning tea. I am delighted to say, the visitors left with a very positive impression of our school, our students and our staff. On Friday evening, a group of staff, parents and students attended the Moree Reconciliation Week Awards ceremony. These awards recognise individuals, businesses, community organisations and initiatives that are advancing reconciliation and respectful relationships in Moree. We are very proud of the students who were award nominees. Congratulations to Milos Stanojevic, Ben DiDonna, Chloe Elbourne, Chaz Noble and Talara Munro for being recognised at the awards ceremony - well done! Our congratulations go to all recipients and to the Moree Reconciliation Committee for their organisation of an extremely significant ceremony. This year’s guest speaker was Ms Karla Ranby, a former MPS and Carol Ave High School student who went on to study journalism at university and now works at Triple J as both the weekend lunch presenter and music producer. Karla shared a little of her personal life journey to reflect how conditions have changed through hard work and resilience of so many Aboriginal families, both past and present.

This is an amazing program that fosters beautiful social interaction (with kinder children), skills in growing fresh food and creating healthy delights – a real paddock to plate experience. Thank you - Mrs Fitzgerald, Miss Kleinig, Miss Pickerin, Miss Quirk and Mr Brown for your inspirational work.

The cooler weather and some rain have brought ideal conditions for our garden and the Kindergarten students have enjoyed spending their lunchtimes with their Year 4 buddies. They have planted silverbeet, kale, cabbage, beetroot, shallots as well as daisies and pansies to encourage insects. The children have been excited to find fruit growing on the trees and harvested the lemons and made cordial.

Traditional, Australiana or recycled? We know those in attendance at the Easter Hat parade (last day Term 1) enjoyed the colour and creativity on display. I was extremely impressed by the fantastic dancing by the K-2 grade with a special message of appreciation to Mrs Assef for choreographing the dancing display. The judges had an extremely difficult task in selecting the hats in each category but we were all a little excited to have a basket of goodies delivered to each class.

The Celtic Festival held in Glen Innes each year is a highlight for both the highland dancers and the Moree pipe band. It is no secret that I have a special interest in both and I am delighted to say that a small group of MPS students joined with Glen Innes students to perform as the Glenmore Highland Dancers. Despite a wet start to the festival street march, the dancers dressed in traditional Scottish regalia presented a 20 minute bracket based upon the theme of the Braemar Highland Gathering. Well done: Harlee Gulliver, Olivia Ross, Harriet and Edward Beattie, Ella and Isobel Lavery, Ryan Macey (piper), Millie Macey (band) and GI students, Sarah O’Brien, Travis O’Brien (piper), Kate Lawler, Philippa and Walter Sloman.

Lest we forget - ANZAC Day ... MPS welcomed Mr John Williams who served in Vietnam with the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. Mr Williams gave a moving account of life after Service along with a message of encouragement to seek support as challenges and problems (may) arise in our lives. The attendance of Mr Roger Butler OAM was also appreciated.

Our school leaders – Lucy, Milos, Chloe, Lachlan, Ruby, James, Talara and Ben are commended for leading the ceremony. The students spoke with confidence and appropriate reverence in front of the large audience. Mr Williams was most complimentary of the ANZAC service, our school and of the positive attitude displayed by students as they entered and exited the assembly area and their attentive response throughout the service.

The MPS choir conducted by Miss March and accompanied by Mr Roberts are congratulated for treating us to a wonderful performance of Lead Kindly Light and The Last Anzac. Congratulations also go to the school band for accompanying the choir and to Ryan Macey playing the bagpipes to open and close the assembly and Ms Drenkhan for playing Last Post and Reveille as a most poignant component of the service.

Again, Moree Public School was well represented at the Moree community ANZAC Day commemoration - a large contingent of students and staff participated in the march to honour the service personnel who have served Australia. Thank you to the boys and girls along with our teachers and parents who supported the children on the day.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

All four girls gave it their best shot in the games and Harriet and Georgie were both named in the possible and probables. While they weren't selected in the North West side the girls are to be congratulated for making such a great effort! Congratulations to the girls for displaying enthusiasm and sportsmanship.

The MPS Equestrian team has recently enjoyed two outstanding performances at Willow Tree (29th March) and Inverell McIntyre High School (5th April). Both carnivals had record entries and all ribbons were had earned by the MPS students – all riding with such a positive sporting spirit.

A team of six riders, Charlotte Smith, Paige Bowerman, Rylee O’Dempsey, Jack McDonald, Dekota Caban and Roly McDonald rode at Willow Tree PS carnival in events: riding class, hack, versatile pony, barrels, bend, flag and keyhole.

A team of nine riders, Charlotte Smith, Harry Smith, Paige Bowerman, Rylee O’Dempsey, Blayne O’Dempsey, Trixie Warburton, Jemima Warburton, Jack McDonald, Roly McDonald represented at Inverell with outstanding results. There were numerous ribbons, with Jemima and Harry taking out the Highest Point score for their respective age groups.

Last Thursday, Dominic LeMilliere, Layne Trotter, Travis Munro, Jasper Taunton, Chaz Noble, Harry Guest, Harry Smith, Will Gillingham, Jack Rogers, Justin Norrie, Blayne O’Dempsey, Morgan Bridge, Kaleb Johnson, Darcy Brazel, Ben DiDonna, Brent Hourigan, Mitch Beddoes, Richard Knox- Greenaway, Sonny Johnson and Ambrose Swan represented Moree Public School at the North West 7s Gala Day. Students were worthy representatives of their school and certainly reflected the NSW Waratahs key values: respect, pride, accountability and inclusiveness.

Both teams did exceptionally well throughout the day as they developed their rucking and mauling skills against St Philomenas, Bingara Central School and Warialda Public School.

The Under 10s team went through undefeated in their pool games. In a tense and exciting double over time final, Moree PS lost by one try to Warialda PS

The open team had a steady start, drawing their first game against St Philomenas. The boys were quick to find their rhythm though, putting on wins in their next three matches. The final game was a gruelling effort in defence which saw the boys go down to Warialda.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

School Spectacular

School Spectacular - The Greatest 2018 was an outstanding showcase of the talent in public schools across NSW and our senior choir was part of it! In terms of sheer size, scale and scope, Schools Spectacular is unequalled in the world with a 2700-strong choir, 2300 diverse dancers, an 80-piece symphony orchestra, a world-class stage band and a huge number of outstanding solo performers. Our public schools have so many talented musicians, singers and dancers!

While the School Spectacular is about entertaining the audience, it is also a learning experience for our students. It takes a lot of commitment to be involved and to learn so many new songs is hard work. To travel the 700 kilometres to Sydney, to complete rehearsals and to perform four times is tiring. Our children showed the commitment and stamina needed and were part of an entertainment and learning experience they will never forget.

I extend a huge thankyou to Miss March for her dedication and talent in preparing the students and to Mr McDonald and Mrs Hosegood for their work in organising the trip and supporting the children.

The rehearsal hours (over two days) were long and no doubt, students felt a little weary as the curtain closed on the fourth show (Saturday evening) but being part of such a large production proved to be a SPECTACULAR experience.

The choir featured on the stage for an 8 minute classical performance of Zadok the Priest, coronation anthem by George Frederic Handel, and This is Me, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for The Greatest Showman. The choir also sang backing vocals for the featured artists throughout the three-hour show!

Congratulations: Araya Berger, Sophie Cameron, Meg Cooper, Chloe Elbourne, Destiny Fernando, Shaylee Haines, Kaitlyn Hallam, Ella Hardman, Camilla Johnston, Isabelle Kelly, Jessica Knowles, Felicity March, Emily McDonald, Rylee O’Dempsey, Georgina Quinlan, Sophie Rogers, Izabelle Ross, Liviah Steer, Daisy Timmins Bartlett, Crystal Tooth, Lorraine Townsend and Beatrix Warburton.

The choir had a wonderful six days away, learning new choralography to accompany their songs and stretching their singing skills. The evening shows closed at 10.45pm so bed after 11.00pm did mean some very tired children arrived back at MPS Sunday afternoon.

The children were fantastic representatives for Moree Public School and their town – many compliments were received as the group walked around the Homebush precinct, enjoying a little restaurant dining and the Aquatic Centre during the afternoon break.

The 2018 School Spectacular – The Greatest, will screen on Channel 7 at 7.00pm on Saturday, 8th December – a show not to miss!

Ms Slaven produces the podcast Short & Curly which provides students with the opportunity to air their opinions on various tricky and humorous topics. Concepts ranged from friendship to discrimination to cannibalism! Our students did an incredible job offering well-considered opinions and being quite witty into the bargain. According to Ms Slaven, the audio she recorded will be added to a program that will be available online early in 2019. Well done!

Multicultural Public Perspectives Speaking Competition state final was held at Eugene Goossen Hall (ABC Centre – Ultimo) last Friday and we extend a hearty congratulation to Year 5 student, Chloe Elbourne on a fantastic effort representing our school, town and region. Chloe presented a prepared speech, Unity in Diversity followed by an impromptu speech (5 minutes preparation time) on the topic, No direction. The adjudicators commended Chloe on the high standard of her two presentations and as the only Year 5 student amongst 13 finalist, hope to see her return in 2019. Mrs Hosegood had the pleasure of being in the audience to watch the finals. Congratulations to Chloe - not only did she speak with confidence, Chloe took the opportunity to make new friends with fellow competitors and engaged thoughtfully with the adjudicators when they offered feedback.

11th November 2018 marked the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Our school was represented at the Moree community Remembrance Day ceremony with our school leaders laying a wreath to commemorate the fallen. Thank you to all who were able to join us. At 11:00 am on the following Wednesday students and staff paused for a one-minute silence to remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

At the morning assemblies our student leaders spoke about the significance of Remembrance Day highlighting that the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was the moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front in World War 1. This moment became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.

Whilst the hours are long and no doubt, students will feel a little weary as the curtain closes on Saturday evening, being part of such a large production will be a wonderful experience.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Our partnership with Neutral Bay Public through the City Country Alliance continues to grow. Recently, 30 students and 3 teachers from Neutral Bay visited MPS spending time in classrooms, enjoying a variety of sporting activities on the oval as well as touring key sites in the area including Myall Creek and the generous hospitality of a local farming family. The Neutral Bay students certainly enjoyed the opportunity to run and play on the lush grass of the school – a pleasure they do not have in an inner Sydney school.
The program seeks to develop intercultural understandings and the Neutral bay students left Moree with a greater knowledge and understanding of living in a rural community and the significance of our local Aboriginal culture. We look forward to being able to send a group of students to spend time with Neutral Bay Public School students next year.

Kinder Family Orientation morning was an enjoyable opportunity to speak with many of our new families who will be enrolling children in Kindergarten in 2019. It was fabulous to see so many parents taking the opportunity to see what our school has to offer their children. The children were also excited as they toured the school and visited classrooms.
Sending your child to school for the first time is can be a difficult time. Parents can have many questions. Is my child ready to start school? How will he/she cope? Will they enjoy school? Who will their teacher be? What do the classrooms look like? We hope today assisted in answering these questions.
The next phase of our transition to school program the visits by each of the preschools begins next week. Over the coming weeks each of the preschools will visit kindergarten classrooms. Preschools have been provided with the dates and times for these visits. If your child is starting school but does not attend a preschool please contact Mrs Hosegood to arrange a suitable time for your child to participate.

Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without (Confucius) and this was certainly true as we welcomed former MPS school captain and renowned concert pianist, Thomas Williams, along with cellist, Rob Manley back last Friday to play three concerts/workshops for Years 1-3 students. Thomas and Rob also performed an evening concert at the Moree Art Gallery. It is certainly a great opportunity for our students to enjoy and be inspired by this talent.

Excursions compliment the learning activities which happen in classrooms each day. They are a wonderful opportunity for children to build on the knowledge they have learned in a fun way.

Last week kindergarten children enjoyed an excursion last Tuesday walking to various sites in town including the Fire Station, Dhiyaan Centre and Woolworths before heading out to the Trewalla pecan nut farm and a picnic lunch at Pallamallawa.

Years 1 and 2 travelled to Green Valley Farm for a day full of fun learning activities – viewing a range of farm animals, a museum of artefacts and technology from the past, and of course the very popular mini water slide.

Year 3 students also thoroughly enjoyed their excursion to Lake Keepit - a wonderful venue that gives students the opportunity to enjoy a large range of activities including archery, abseiling and canoeing. We are sure the students had many wonderful stories to tell parents after these enjoyable and informative trips.

Our thanks go to our teachers for organising the excursions and rearranging their own family lives, to accompany the students for overnight trips and to ensure that excursions are available at Moree Public School.

Last Tuesday, 7th of August, both the boys and girls soccer teams played Guyra Central School in round 6 of the PSSA soccer knockout competition.

Despite a massive effort by the girls, they were defeated 3-2 in what was a very close and tough game. Natahlia Davis and Lauren Appleby scored the goals with all team members working hard to keep the ball moving to the Moree end.

The boys had a tight game only just coming away with the win in the last 5 minutes. Sam Custance found the back of the net taking the final score to 2-1. It was a massive effort put in by all the players making it a very exciting and entertaining game. The boys will now move into the semi-finals of the North West competition, with details of the game still being finalised.

Both teams played with excellent sportsmanship and determination. Well done to the girls and good luck to the boys in their next game.

Legends of League

Last Wednesday, the Moree Public School girls league tag team and boys rugby league team travelled to Gunnedah to compete in the regional finals of the Legends of League competition. The quality of teams was of a high standard and both teams competed hard in their pool matches.

The girls team came away with two close losses and a draw against a very tough field of competition. The boys tackle team had a slow start in defence against Warialda PS, managing to escape with a draw. Some improved defensive efforts and coordination of attacking plays, earned the team another draw to St Joseph's Glen Innes. The third game against Glen Innes Public saw both teams go try for try until a remarkable 80 metre intercept by Preston Tighe snatched the win for Moree Public on full time. All students represented their school with pride and great sportsmanship.

Well done, everyone!

Fabulous, terrific, amazing, exciting, fun and wonderful were just a few of the words Year 4 students used to describe their excursion to Coffs Harbour. Clearly, they had a great time and managed to use every minute of the trip to learn and grow through visiting unique venues and being with friends. Excursions like this one are not only a great learning experience but they also give the students memories they will keep with them for a very long time.

The students also represented our school well, maintaining the very high standards of participation and behaviour throughout the trip. Special thanks to Mr Burgess (organiser), Miss Larken, Miss Jones, Miss Carlin and our parent helpers, Mr Kelly, Mr Beddoes and Mrs Jackson for taking the students.

Books are full of treasure – you just have to read to find it. From last week until the end of next week the school will conduct a number of activities that promote the joy of books and reading with Book Week officially starting next Monday.

MPS got an early start with our visiting shows last week - last Tuesday children were fortunate to be able to attend one of two visiting shows performed by Meerkat Productions. Students in Year K-3 saw the play Boy based on the Childrens Book Council Book of the Year short-listed book. Years 3-6 were privileged to see The Elephant another title short-listed for book of the year. There was plenty of laughter during both shows as the very entertaining and talented performers brought the books to life.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a colouring competition based on the short-listed books. Judging will occur shortly and prizes will be awarded next week.

Dress up day is on the Tuesday 21st August. The day is an out of uniform day so that children can come dressed as their favourite book character. Have you got your child's costume ready?

Creating tomorrow's future

Public schools, like ours, cater for all students and are vital for the wellbeing of society – children of all races, cultures, religions and abilities come together to learn in a cohesive and stimulating environment. The Moree Public School community – students, staff, parents and community members - can be very proud of what we continue to achieve by working together and striving for excellence.

Last Monday the established Education Week tradition to open with an interdenominational Service of Worship continued. The children were both informed and entertained by Reverend Brown and Reverend Hayes. As always, our students listened attentively and displayed excellent manners. Student representatives involved in the service spoke eloquently and the choir performed beautifully under the guidance of Miss March and Mr Roberts.

A little later in the morning many parents took the opportunity to join the teachers for a delightful morning tea. It is always nice to meet and speak with parents in this informal setting. Morning tea was followed by our open classrooms session. Teachers and students were delighted to have many parents and friends visit their classroom.

The parents I spoke with were highly impressed with what they saw. I extend a huge thank you to all involved in our Education Week activities – Today's schools creating tomorrow's future.

NW Rugby League Carnival at Kingscliff

On Sunday, 17th June we were on the road to participate in the NSW PSSA in Kingscliff as a member of the north west Under 11 rugby league team. On Monday, I had a training session with the whole team for the first time. It was great to catch up with some old friends. On Tuesday, I played in my first game against McKillop. The first half was really tough because we were down 12-0. Second half we turned it around with no points scored. In our second game, we versed Riverina and we won 6-4. Our coach was pretty happy with that.

On Wednesday, we played Hunter and we won 8-4. Hunter was a similar team to us and were very difficult to beat. Our next game we played Sydney South West. Most of their players were nearly as big as Mr Brown. We tackled hard and kept the score low, losing 10-0. Sydney South West were the next giants that we played. We lost to them 18-6.

On Thursday, we played Western to finish either 7th or 8th in the competition. We ended up finishing 8th overall. That is the best North West has done in some time. Within this game I received man of the match. Over the three days I played the positions of hooker, centre, lock and wing. It was a really good experience and I had a lot of fun playing.

NAIDOC Day is a most significant occasion. Those who attended were highly impressed. Our student leaders did a fantastic job leading the whole school assembly and the choir excelled with a lovely selection of songs. The didge boys accompanied the flag raising and also gave a little performance at the assembly – well done! We thank local Gomeroi Elder, Mr Malcom Peckham for joining the celebration and participating in our flag raising ceremony.

Our special guests for the day were traditional Aboriginal dancers, Albert, Steadman, Dave and Murriwa led by the very talented, Roy Newman. I thank Ms Roberts and Mr French for their work in coordinating the activities. Each year, Ms Roberts teaches Year 2 how to cook Jonny cakes while Year 1 and kinder create some beautiful art and craft. The primary students also enjoyed a unique opportunity to develop their skills with an afternoon workshop of Move it Mob Style dancing technique.

The Kitchen Garden cooking program can only be described as a yummy success! Mrs Fitzgerald and Miss Kleinig taught two after school cooking classes that used the fresh produce from the garden. Led by Mrs Fitzgerald, the students and the Kitchen Garden team, Mr Pirie, Miss Kleinig, Mrs Brown and Mrs Hallam made spinach slice and coleslaw, spinach cob loaf and kale smoothies to serve a wonderful afternoon treat.

In addition, the kitchen garden club members of the past three years attended a cooking class with celebrity chef, Mr Clayton Donavan. The outdoor kitchen was kindly sponsored by Landcare and gave students another opportunity to learn how to cook (and eat) a very healthy option - Sang Chou Now with kangaroo meat. Mrs Fitzgerald and Miss Kleinig were most impressed with the enthusiasm and participation of the students.

Public speaking is one of the many skills that will definitely stand you in good stead in most careers and I am pleased to note that MPS is gaining a reputation for developing our students in this domain. In debating and in the Multicultural Perspective Public Speaking competition our students perform very well. This was again the case for the students who represented the school at the public speaking regional finals held in Inverell recently. This event is always very hotly contested and our students performed extremely well by delivering informative and entertaining speeches. Particular congratulations to Chloe Elbourne who won the Years 5/6 category and will now go on to represent the regional at the next level later in the year. A fantastic effort! Well done also to Harriet Beattie, Isabelle Kelly and Edward Beattie who also received positive feedback for both their prepared and impromptu speeches.

Digital Technologies in Focus (DTIF) is an initiative that involves students learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of working as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment. As part of this program students in six of the primary classes have been creating their own websites. Students took the opportunity to invite their parents to see what they had produced and it was pleasing to see so many parents take up the invitation.

The computer room was filled to capacity last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings as parents and family members were taken through the website created by their child. The students shared new learning and I am delighted to say, parents were highly impressed with both the website and the skills that were required to bring it to fruition. We are excited to be adding another group of classes and teachers to participate in DTIF next semester. My thanks go to Miss Carlin, Mr McDonald, Miss McPherson, Miss Everingham, Mrs Ross, Miss Jones and Miss Larken for facilitating this program.

Congratulations to the students who have participated in the recent school round of the state-wide competition. There is no doubt that each of the entrants spoke clearly and with conviction in presenting their prepared speeches - they shared such positive messages and optimism about living in an inclusive and multicultural Australia. Speakers had a range of unique messages – retelling their family's story; explaining that games bring us together; outlining the values that unite and define us as Australians; the part that media plays in keeping us and our world connected; and dreams for a harmonious world. Following the prepared speeches, each speaker had five minutes to prepare an impromptu speech – an extremely difficult task but one which the students accomplished well. The Years 3/4 topic, Man's best friend and the Years 5/6 topic, Participating is more important that winning, led to some very interesting and inspiring words of wisdom. Fantastic presentations and congratulations! Chloe Elbourne (Unity in diversity), Harriet Beattie (Living between cultures), Isabelle Kelly (What makes an Australian), and Edward Beattie (Belonging) will now compete at Ross Hill Public School on Wednesday, 27th August.

A winter spruce of the gardens took place last Saturday by a dedicated P&C gardening committee. A huge thank you is extended to the parents who helped spread over nine cubic metres of mulch, trimmed, weeded and planted. It takes a big team effort to ensure the grounds and gardens always look fantastic so it was wonderful to have such a tremendous amount of work completed in one afternoon. Our thanks to Don and Amanda Mealing, Brett and Emma Cooper, Sarah Phillips, Kate Guest, Bianca Senior, Adriana Pippos and Lenice Muggleton.

Budding scientists and problem solvers are encouraged through a range of academic challenges. A group of eager MPS students recently participated in the annual Science and Engineering Challenge at Narrabri. Mr McDonald was thrilled with the co- operative manner in which our teams approached their tasks. Whilst winning the bridge building section (tested as the strongest construction) MPS came an impressive overall second in the event.

The Kitchen Garden Club is an extra-curricula activity that is fosters both a green thumb linked to cooking of the fresh produce. Year 4 mentor the kinder students under the guidance of Miss Kleinig and Mrs Fitzgerald – my stroll through the garden area revealed an amazing array of vegetables and some very healthy fruit trees. The children (and I) are certainly looking forward to the cooking program, although this does remind me of the very famous tale, The Little Red Hen ... Perhaps I could offer to help with the washing up!

Studio Time is one of several extra-curricula activities that are unique to MPS and only possible through the generosity of staff members. Last Thursday afternoon I took the opportunity to sit in on a recording session with our Studio Time group and I was extremely impressed by Mr McDonald's creative skills, the use of technology and also the mentoring of students. Likewise, the students impressed with their singing and their dedication to getting it right. The latest song is entitled, Remarkable and I know the final version will be fantastic. The group has also made a video clip for the song and we can look forward to the premiere which will be held during an assembly later in the term.

Tennis – The MPS team, Lauren Appleby, Georgina Quinlan, Sophie Rogers, Wallace Foreman, Aydan McGuire and Jeremy Blatchford played Gunnedah South Public School in the PSSA knockout. This was a most enjoyable day with all team members playing well - 3 sets (MPS) to 5 sets (Gunnedah Sth) and most importantly displaying excellent sportsmanship against a strong team. In addition, we congratulate Lauren Appleby who recently travelled to Albury as a No.2 player for the north west tennis team, contesting the PSSA state carnival. Lauren joined nine students from Tamworth, Gunnedah, Narrabri and Guyra to represent our region, with the team coming home with a most creditable 9 th placing in the tournament. The team won four matches and lost four with Lauren winning four matches in the singles. Lauren enjoyed the experience and was thrilled to meet recently retired Australian tennis star, Sam Groth who gave some excellent advice about training, playing on the courts whenever possible and always to try your hardest. Congratulations, Lauren!

Congratulations to our hard-working P&C members on organising such an enjoyable event. Many children and their families attended and while the event raised money, more importantly it provided a great opportunity for families and friends to get together. Great job and thankyou to our parents and friends that brought the evening to fruition – a tasty barbecue, beautiful soup and lots of sweet treats and popcorn certainly made the evening one to remember. A special word of thanks to all who donated soup and other goodies.

Debating at MPS is certainly a skill that is covered in the classrooms but this is the second year that we have been involved in the NSW state competition. In 2017, MPS Thistles debated their way to the regional finals and this year we again have two teams putting their best arguments forward. To date, the MPS Brolgas have debated MPS Herons (Herons scoring a win); the Herons have debated two Ross Hill teams (last week but being narrowly defeated); and on 21 June both MPS will take on Warialda PS. The topics have included: That primary schools should have compulsory sport for every student, every lunch time; That kids caught cyberbullying should be banned from all computers and devices until they turn 18; and That the best behaved students each day should get a 30 minute early mark from school. As one can imagine, the teams had some very compelling (and perhaps creative) arguments for both sides of the debate – making a very difficult task for the adjudicators.

Reconciliation Week was an opportunity for MPS staff to join with parents and community members at morning tea held last Tuesday. We were very warmly welcomed to country and followed this up with some wonderful conversation and morning tea. Elders and community members visited classrooms to talk with children and to see the work the children do in class. I am delighted to say, the visitors left with a very positive impression of our school, our students and our staff. On Thursday morning, our Didgeridoo boys performed at the commemorative ceremony to place name plagues on the graves at the Aboriginal section of the Moree Cemetery. The boys, under the guidance of Mr Brown performed in what was a very moving ceremony. On Friday evening, a small group of staff, parents and students attended the Moree Reconciliation Week Awards ceremony. These awards recognise individuals, businesses, community organisations and initiatives that are advancing reconciliation and respectful relationships in Moree. Our school was well represented with the Digeridoo group again performing in front of the large audience. We are also very proud of the students who were award nominees. Congratulations to Marni Ryan, Ben DiDonna and Lauren Appleby on their awards and to Preston Tighe on being nominated. Our congratulations go to all award winners on the night and to the Moree Reconciliation Committee on their organisation of what was a very good night of awards and entertainment.

In a very close match, the MPS boys were beaten by 15 runs – so close! Mr Cooper tells me that he was very impressed by the effort the boys put in and by their sportsmanship. A hearty congratulation is extended to the boys on a fantastic season. Making it to the sixth round is a fantastic effort. Well done! Our thanks go to Mr Cooper who has coached and managed the boys so well.

CAPERS dancers, along with Mr McDonald and Miss March are to be congratulated on their wonderful presentation at the dance festival in Tamworth last Friday. The group performed extremely well in front of a full house – at the TREC. This opportunity gave the students an insight to large scale productions and being part of a team. Our thanks go to Mr McDonald and Miss March for giving their time after school each week to work with the group and for taking the students to Tamworth. In fact, Miss March also created the very striking costumes for this occasion! Our school community can be very proud of the way the students represented the school. The students were: Michelle Dunlop, Gabrielle Elbourne, Kailani Bartlett, Millicent Beattie, Ryan Macey, Wallace Foreman, Macey Phillis, Reese Boughton, Felicity March, Iky Davis, Dusty Smith, Eliza Warby, Ellah Briggs, Hannah Bailey and Vye Singleton.

Twilight Fete

Cakes, plants, chocolate wheel, BBQ, fruit salad, jumping castle, tug o' war, fairy den, face painting ... these and much more at the 2017 twilight fete! MPS families and friends enjoyed the friendly atmosphere created through the 2017 twilight fete and what a great success! While the ultimate goal of this P&C activity is to raise funds for the school it also does much in promoting the positive relationship between students, staff, parents and community.

There where were many stalls, all very popular but I suspect the Dunk a Teacher activity was very profitable - I know I was very wet! Congratulations and a big thank you to the P&C fete organising committee for co-ordinating a wonderful evening of activities. We also thank the many parents and staff who assisted setting up, packing up and all tasks in between! This kind assistance was greatly appreciated. Thank you to the many generous sponsors, service organisations and business houses for supporting the students of MPS. Whilst a full list will be published in the coming week, I would like to mention: Moree Rotary (chocolate wheel), Lions Club (cool room), Clontarf (soccer shootout), Northcott Society (sensory play area), Mrs Jane Rohde (petting zoo), Mr Marty Roberts, Eda Kukucozmen and Josh Henley (musical entertainment) and of course the driving forces behind the fete, Mrs Trish Humphries, Ms Megan Miller and the P&C committee.

The MPS Thistles – Millicent Beattie, Michelle Dunlop, Kalaini Bartlett and Ella Coulton have debated their way to the regional finals, hosted yesterday at Moree Public. The topic, That primary teachers should set projects for homework during the holidays proved rather difficult to argue! Ms Mary Atkin viewing the debate in Sydney via a VC link-up indicated that she had been both entertained and challenged as an adjudicator. Following her lengthy deliberation Ms Atkin awarded the debate to Ben Venue by a narrow margin. Congratulations to the Thistles and coach, Mr McDonald and thank you to Chairperson, Gabrielle Elbourne. This is the first year for quite some time that MPS has entered the NSW Premier's Debating competition – we look forward to building upon the experiences in 2018. Mr McDonald and Mrs Hosegood have been thrilled with the enthusiasm and skill development of the 12 students who have participated. Well done!

We were delighted to be able to present Year 6 student, Jesse James with a medallion for his participation in the National Cross Country Championships held at Hobart late last term. As a Moree Public School student who has represented at a national title event, Jesse's photograph now joins the gallery of students (1990 – current) who have achieved this level of distinction in either sport or academia. It is certainly inspirational to view the photographs and consider their current whereabouts and professions – England, Italy, Queensland university and two physiotherapists! We are always interested in hearing about our former students, so parents and grandparents, please feel free to let us know their interesting updates.

Year 3 excursion to Lake Keepit at the end of last term proved to be most enjoyable. Students certainly had many wonderful stories to share after such an active and informative trip. Lake Keepit is a scenic venue and it gives students the opportunity to enjoy a large range of activities including archery, rope climbs and canoeing. These activities help to develop student confidence, social and teamwork skills in an environment that promotes active and healthy life styles. Our thanks go to the staff who supported the excursion - Mr Burgess, Miss March, Mrs McDonald, Miss Quirk and parent, Mr Beddoes.

Waking up to Sunrise this morning may have provided some very pleasant surprises for Moree folk, on Tuesday October 10! The MPS didge group under the guidance of Mr Brown, were actually up and about before sunrise, in readiness to perform at the live recording of the show at the Moree Aquatic Centre. The didge group was introduced by Sam Mac at the end of the 6.30am weather segment and gave a lovely performance – well done boys! A special word of appreciation is also extended to the Sunrise team and the staff of Moree Tourism, Moree Shire Council and Moree Aquatic Centre – all contributing to a great Moree!

MPS teams in the Premier's Debating Challenge

Arguing (with good manners and conviction) is a skill that can be developed through debating. To be able to speak publically and use reasoning skills to deliver a point of view are skills we sometimes associate with lawyers and politicians but effective communication skills are important for all of us. MPS has taken on the challenge of giving our students the opportunity to learn and practise these skills through participation in the Premier's Debating Challenge.

As the luck of the knockout draw would have it, two MPS teams had to face off in their fourth round. The debate topic was, That children should learn at school using television and movies and not just through books. After a very close tussle of words the MPS Thistles (Millicent Beattie, Michelle Dunlop, Kailani Bartlett and Ella Coulton) defeated the MPS Prickly Pears (Gabrielle Elbourne, Charlotte Clissold, Ryan Macey and Theo Maybury). The adjudicator, Mrs Appleby spoke very positively about the quality of the children's public speaking, the logical arguments presented, their level of rebuttal and adhering to debating protocols for each of the speaker roles. We would like to thank Mrs Appleby for adjudicating and providing feedback for areas to develop in preparation for the next round. The Thistles, coached by Mr McDonald will now take on Glen Innes Public School on Thursday at Glen Innes.

Social skills focus for this week continues to be:

Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't make them ALL yourself!

Kids Quotes:

Learn to observe others and be prepared to help them if they make a mistake.

We all make mistakes but try to avoid following the mistakes of others.

Tell Them From Me Survey is just one method in which we are able to seek ideas and opinions of school processes and programs. Parents are reminded that Moree Public School again invites you to complete the Tell Them From Me survey. To complete the survey parents require a computer with access to the internet. The web address for the survey is https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/mps2618.

Parents who would like to complete the survey, but do not have access to the internet at home or a Smartphone may contact the school office to arrange a suitable time to use the computers in the school library. The support of parents in completing the survey is appreciated.
